Whilst standing at the traffic lights recently, eagerly awaiting the appearance of the little green man, somebody stepped in front of me and pushed the button, even though I was clearly at the traffic lights before them and myelf within pushing distance of the button.
I thought that was a bit rude, to presume I was not clever enough to realise the little green man only appears when summoned with said button.
Nevertheless, my day went on.
A couple days later, I approach the same set of traffic lights. My position had changed, somebody was already at the lights, next to the button.
Sadly, the little green man is a bit predictable, and one knows when he is about to pop up. Or is he??
When he should have made his loud beeping appearance, he didn't. Where was the little green man?!? Was he sick? Having the day off, gone to the beach? He cannot just not turn up, not without a replacement. Something must be wrong...
After two more light changes, I realised the person standing next to the button had not pushed the button, and was not intending to push the button any time soon. They thought the little green man just appeared, that no effort was needed to be expended on their part to entice him to appear.
So I leant over rather rudely and pushed the button.
Sure enough, the little green man promptly appeared.
Reflecting on my traffic light adventures of recent days, it occured to me that my incident musn't be unique. In fact, it must happen so often as to warrent other people to always assume one has not pushed the litte green man summoning button.
Hopefully others can learn from todays parable.
